So basically, the prehistoric Moth’s had scales on their wings that acted as relfectors, reflecting bright eon colors. The Moth’s used these colors for mating, warning signs, and even being social with one another. If yellow and green were displayed, it was for defense.

What interested me most: I wasn’t aware a bug could have scales. I thought it was cool with how neon they’re depicted as. The sclaes are meant to reflect in a away where the colors look the same from every angle. I found in interesting how the Moth’s used the colors as a social method. I chose this because I’d never heard of bug having scales.

Is Chivalry the Norm for Insects?

Date: 10/7/2011

Summary:

Instead of controlling their female partners through fighting and aggressive behavior, male bugs were revealed to be protective, even risking their lives when their mates faced danger. Female insects have of mates and the last mate is most likely to fertilize the eggs. Field Crickets are very caring with their mates. It was presumed that male crickets hindered the female cricket’s life after the offspring were raised. To get a better idea and eye into the lives of wild field crickets, the research team used digital video technology, tagging different crickets and even using DNA fingerprinting. Over 200,000 hours of infra-red video footage, taken over two entire breeding seasons was recorded and analyzed. No evidence of aggressive males was found. Males killed and defended whichever insects attempted to harm the lives of their female mates.

What you found most interesting about the article and why:

I found it interesting that crickets actually can care for their mates. It is interesting that the female cricket will have several mates before she lays her offspring. I would have thought the male cricket would have killed the female one. I found it amazing that they recorded so much footage to prove a point.
